“Al Kufi”
Al Kufi type was named after the city from which it emerged, Al Kufah in Iraq in 639 DC. It became popular in no time because of the simplicity of its shapes, therefore, many of Al Quran copies in that era were written using it.Later on, more than 30 variations of this basic font were created in Damascus, Morocco, Cairo and many other cities in the Muslim world.
In the photo, you can see two samples for one of those variations “Al Kufi Al Muwarraq”..which means “Al Kufi with leaves” as the letters are decorated with shapes derived and inspired by leaves and plants.
Ali Bin Abi Taleb Is one of the first people known to use and master Al Kufi type, and a his excellent works can be found in Topkapy museum, Turkey.
